Oregon coast indian skinning knife, c1900s

Curved blade Indian skinning knife with wood handle, this OLD knife was acquired at Yoncala, Oregon in the 1950s. It is typical of Plains Indian knives which were made of reworked blades (blades were acquired from traders, blacksmiths or home-made from old files). These types of knives, with Indian-made wood handles were made as early as the 1800s.

It measures approximately 9 5/8" in overall length; again tyical length for these types of knives which measured anywhere from 9 to 13 inches.

Handle and blade are in good condition. No cracking or brakes in either...blade is definitely worn! As shown on p. 394 in North American Indian Artifacts, Hothem.

C1909 U.S. Cavalry Daly packer mule saddle

This is a once in a lifetime find for us. Made under contract for the U.S. Cavalary, this saddle was used on mule trains by the "driver" to ride the mule closest to the wagon's left front.

This saddle was featured in the  handbook Daly wrote for the U.S. Cavalry. It is shown in copies of the handbook as a 1909 Daly packer (Daly recommended these saddles). This version, without skirts, was known as a "skeleton" model.

This has a cinch safe on the left side that is marked with "Rock Island Arsenal". We doubt it is the original but are leaving it on the saddle.

Saddle is in rideable condition as found. However, these are incredibly rare and it would be wise to properly repair and store it.
